Liposuction Q&A

What is Tumescent Liposuction?

Tumescent Liposuction is a technique in which a large volume of fluid is introduced into the fat before it is removed. This fluid provides complete anesthesia allowing the procedure to be done completely under local anesthesia (awake liposuction). The fluid also contains a medication which eliminates any bleeding and also allows the surgery to be done with very small instruments.

Do I have to be put to sleep?

Absolutely not, Dr. Crabtree performs all Smartlipo/ Liposuction procedures under local anesthesia. If necessary, Dr. Crabtree provides a sedative to his “nervous” patients before the procedure is started and strives to keep each patient completely comfortable during surgery. Patients can watch television, listen to their favorite music or simply relax and take a nap. Once the procedure begins, many patients want to talk to the Doctor and ask questions.

Is this safer than older techniques?

Tumescent liposuction is much safer since you don’t have to be put to sleep. Most of the big risks associated with previous liposuction were in being put to sleep.

Do I have to go to the hospital?

No, we perform this procedure in our fully accredited office surgery suite. This eliminates the cost associated with hospitalization. It also eliminates the added cost of general anesthesia, since it is performed entirely with local anesthesia.

How many treatments will I need?

Although rarely a second fine tuning procedure is needed, most individuals require a single treatment to sculpt and reshape an area.

When can I return to work?

Most individuals return to work in 1-2 days depending on which areas are treated. Dr. Crabtree does not put any restrictions on his liposuction patients after the procedure including lifting and bending. (exception: patients can shower anytime after surgery, but may not submerge in bathwater, hot tubs, etc. for 3 weeks)

When can I resume exercising?

Most individuals can resume some form of exercising the next day. We allow our patients to do what ever they are comfortable doing and we do encourage exercise the next day.

Will I need to wear a garment after surgery?

Yes, we do have our patients wear a light compression garment for the first 1-2 weeks after surgery. (exception: the neck and jowl band is worn 1-2 days only)

Will I have swelling after surgery?

Yes, all individuals experience some minor swelling post-operatively. Due to small instrumentation there is much less trauma to the tissue after tumescent liposuction therefore swelling and bruising is minimized. Any bruising resolves within 1-2 weeks and most of the swelling has gone down by six weeks post-op.

When can I see my final results?

Most patients see a change in contour the day following their procedure. Although most people will see the majority of their changes at six weeks, some minor reduction may go on for several months. The Smartlipo laser may cause skin contraction for up to one year.

Who are the best candidates for liposuction?

Although virtually anyone can benefit from liposuction, the ideal candidate is close to their normal body weight with localized areas of fat that responds poorly to diet and exercise.

What happens if I gain weight after surgery?

Small weight gains will result in fat accumulating in other areas. Large weight gains can cause remaining fat cells to expand in all areas resulting in a loss of some of the benefits of surgery.

What happens to my skin after Liposuction surgery?

The skin is surprisingly forgiving in most areas. The combination of contraction from liposuction surgery and tightening from the Smartlipo or Prolipo Plus laser usually causes the skin to pull up quite nicely. Sometimes as a result of factors such as a large weight loss, poor skin elasticity from genetics or the aging process, the skin will not tighten completely. Dr. Crabtree discusses the amount of skin contraction that can be expected when patients come for their initial complimentary consultation.
